Elevated serum parathyroid hormone related protein and 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol in hypercalcaemia associated with adult T-cell leukaemia-lymphoma.

Hypercalcaemia occurs in up to 80% of patients with adult T-cell leukaemia-lymphoma (ATLL) associated with human T-cell leukaemia virus-1 infection. Elevated serum levels of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, implicated in the pathogenesis of hypercalcaemia in lymphoma, and of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), which is associated with hypercalcaemia of several solid malignancies, were de...

Bovine Leukaemia Virus onco-protein Tax antigen identification in human lymphomas tissue

Background: Bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) is the primary cause of enzootic bovine leukaemia which belongs to the HTLV/BLV group of oncogenic retroviruses including Human T-cell leukaemia virus types 1, 2, and 3 and simian T-lymphotropic virus. Due to daily consumption of milk, meat and other dairy by-products, a possible role in appearing human cancers can be assumed for BLV. Materials and Metho...

Severe hypercalcaemia and lymphoma in an HTLV-1 positive Jamaican woman: a case report

Human T cell lymphotrophic virus type-1 infection is endemic in the Afro-Caribbean community in Britain, with carriage rates of about 3%. Although there is a long latency, carriers have a 1-5% chance of developing adult T cell leukaemia/lymphoma, a condition frequently complicated by marked and refractory hypercalcaemia, and with a poor prognosis. We present the case of an elderly Jamaican woma...

Adult T-cell leukaemia and lymphoma: report of two cases and a brief review of the literature.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) can cause adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATLL). Two patients originating from the Caribbean area with ATLL are described. The first patient developed respiratory insufficiency due to acute T-cell leukaemia. The diagnosis was suspected because of characteristics of abnormal lymphocytes in the blood smear. The second patient had lymphadenopathy an...

Hypercalcaemia and multiple osteolytic lesions in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

A 12 year old boy presenting with hypercalcaemia (calcium 3.25 mmol/l) and osteopaenia with multiple osteolytic lesions was found to have acute lymphoblastic leukaemia without lymph-adenopathy or organomegaly. Hypercalcaemia is a rare feature of acute leukaemia, but the patients previously described all show very similar characteristics, which were highlighted in this patient. These include age...
